Researchers claim that fruit juice which contains too much sugar actually increases your risk of developing certain cancers, rather than preventing them. So a glass of juice might not be as beneficial as you think. When juice drinks has been processed and packaged, many of their ingredients, which protect against tumours, have been vanished.

To examine the effects of sugary juices, a research team from Australia carried out a study including more than two thousand adults. They examined the diets of study participants and they were asked to fill in a feedback form, specifying their daily eating habits. All the study participants were followed for two years to observe how many of them developed the disease.

Researchers found that eating apples, sprouts, cauliflower or broccoli on a daily basis diminished the possibility of developing the disease. But those who consumed lots of fruits juice had an elevated risk of developing the condition. People those drinking more than three glasses of sugary juice a day were more prone to develop rectal cancer, which is a form of bowel cancer.

They believe that high content of sugar in juice may trigger certain cancers. Researchers also found that during juice processing many things contained in fruit those help protect against bowel cancer such as vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants are vanished. The study was reported in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

According to researchers from Bangor University, Wales, people would be more contented by eating prunes or other dried fruit, because even freshly-squeezed juice contains as much as five teaspoons of sugar per glass. But other experts suggest that people should not eschew fruit juice totally, as it is still healthier than other drinks.

This is not a large scale study and does not provide clear picture whether different fruits and vegetables affect the risk of cancer in parts of the bowel. Many fruits and vegetables are a good source of fibre, and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables could reduce the risk of other types of cancer, explained Nell Barrie from Cancer Research UK.
