Millions of women worldwide suffer from fibroids, which is a growth in and around the uterus. The size of fibroid may vary from as small as grape to full term pregnancy. The symptoms of fibroids may include bloating, heavy periods, backache and urinary incontinence. The woman who is suffering from it may have to undergo a surgery.

But now women need not to go through painful surgery anymore. Presently GE Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) is introduced by Jaslok Hopital that treats uterine fibroids with the help of high intensity ultrasound waves to non-invasively annihilate benign tumours of the uterus.

In MrgFUS therapy, fine beam of ultrasound waves are focused on the fibroid, increasing the temperature within it in such a manner that the blood flow to it is curbed, causing the fibroids to ultimately smolder. The MRgFUS therapy involves no hospitalization and no anesthesia. At present, the most common treatment for fibroids is hysterectomy, a surgical process.

According to Dr Rishma Dhillon Pai, consultant gynecologist from Jaslok Hospital, the MRgFUS treatment has absolutely no side-effects and the patient can return to work the next day. It is cost effective to hysterectomy. It eliminates fibroids without harming surrounding tissues, therefore fertility, conception ability to bear a child are not affected.

But, the MrgFUS therapy has its own restrictions. MrgFUS effectively treats a single fibroid of size not more than ten cm. The fibroid should be in the well-located position for the ultra sound waves to reach and the patient should not have undergone any previous surgery, explained Dr Rakesh Sinha, president of Indian Association of Gynaecological Endoscopists.

He added that it is also intricate to get fibroids for biopsy. MrgFUS is good alternative for unmarried women and patients who are unfit for surgery. There are many natural ways through which fibroids can be shrunken. Many women do not realize that they have a fibroid unless there are certain symptoms and problems caused by it.
