The researchers have identified a drug that could halt multiple sclerosis (MS) in its ways. In a major burst through against the devastating disease, researchers have highlighted the chemical driving force behind MS, devoid of it, the condition does not develop. When, the chemical force is wiped up then symptoms are relived greatly.

The devastating condition affects millions of people globally and it can cause blindness and paralysis. Presently there is no treatment for the condition and existing drugs are not appropriate for all sufferers. The immune system chemical known as GM-CSF is considered vital in study of MS.

In healthy human beings, it is a part of defense against diseases, attacking viruses and other aggressors. But in MS, it arouses a series of reactions that finish in forager cell which destroy myelin. Myelin is a protective sheath around nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord that interrupt the broadcast of messages from the brain.

In a lab trail the drug was given to mice whose disease was analogous to the most common form of MS, in which relapses occurred subsequent to periods of remission. When researchers gave an antibody that counters GM-CSF to mice, it greatly improved their health. Here, wiping up the GM-CSF thwarted any further relapses.

According to Professor Becher from the University of Zurich, they are tremendously hopeful but whether this form of therapy will actually help MS patients remains to be seen. Quiet optimism is the way to go. Based on the mouse study, they believe GM-CSF is a positive aspect to target.

This is a very appealing expansion in study for a condition where there are limited treatment options and no cure. It is at early stage and there is still a lot of work to be done before they fully understand what it means for people with MS, but it is satisfying to see that trials are already planned.

They look ahead to seeing how these progresses, stated Dr Doug Brown from the MS Society. Mopping up excess GM-CSF can also help in treating other conditions, including diabetes, it is anticipated.
