According a novel study people with diabetes are seventy percent more prone to die from liver disease, in comparison to those without the condition. It was recognized already that diabetes can raise the risk of several types of liver disease with deprived control of blood sugar that heightens the risk.

This can escort to scarring of the liver that is also called cirrhosis and cancer. The research team from Edinburg investigated the medical records of people aged thirty-five to eight-five for the period of six years. The team compared nearly thirteen hundred diabetic patients to more than ten thousand people without the condition, who all died of liver disease.

The results of the study revealed that about one in four or twenty-five percent people suffering diabetes died of liver cancer, in comparison tone in ten or nine percent of people without diabetes. But more non-diabetic people died from alcoholic liver disease say up to sixty-three percent, in comparison to thirty-eight percent with diabetes.

The diabetes sufferers are advised not to drink too much alcohol because of its possible impact on blood sugar levels and the risk of weight gain. According to lead author Dr Sarah Wild from Edinburgh University, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become much more common recently, especially among people with diabetes.

The key risk aspect for it is being overweight, which is also significant risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease increases the risk of cirrhosis which in turn raises the risk of liver cancer. A healthy lifestyle can diminish the risk and avoidance is particularly important as the options for treatment are limited, added Dr Wild.

The earlier studies have found an association between diabetes and liver disease and this study adds to that knowledge.  Now they need further study to see how diabetes affects the liver that helps to discover new techniques of preventing this complication, explained Dr Iain Frame, director of research from Diabetes UK.
