Binge drinking gene makes you carve alcohol

Since long researchers believed that alcoholism runs in families, but now they have identified a binge drinking gene which give new hope in fighting the growing social crisis. Formerly, it was not clear if an alcoholism connection between family members was cultural or hereditary.

But the latest test shows that desire to drink excessively is associated with the effect of a gene that articulated a protein in area of the brain known as amygdala. The protein TLR4 could be an aim for the development of drugs for alcohol reliance, explained Psychologist Prof Harry June from Maryland University, in US.

In lab study over mice, it was found that alcohol-preferring lab mice had substantial and selective diminution of binge drinking when production of TLR4 was manipulated. The researchers found that when they synthetically encouraged the TLR4 and other brain receptors to promote the good feelings, the lab mice lost interest in alcohol for two weeks after the process.

The amygdala also known as pleasure centre of the brain is accountable for controlling the emotions and has been associated with alcohol dependence in the past. The study points out TLR4 expression contributes to binge drinking and may be a key early neuro-adaptation in excessive drinking, stated Prof June.

He added that binge drinking is a significant public health encumber in need of improved treatment, gene therapy may proffer beneficial substitutes to present psycho-social and pharmaco-therapeutic interventions but identification of the target genes is a clinical challenge. Binge drinking is defined as eight or more units of alcohol in one session and is most common among young people.

Several studies have shown a large amount of alcohol over a shorter period can worse for your health than drinking little and often because it puts a bigger sprain on the liver.
