According to a latest study women are more prone to suffer a poor night sleep in comparison to men after drinking alcohol. It was already established that alcohol may in the beginning intensify sleep during the first half of the night but can disrupt the sleep in later part of the night.

The women are more prone to wake up groggy-eyes, found new US study. In a study carried out by research team in Boston conscripted ninety three adults, including fifty-nine women and thirty-four men in age group of twenty. Among all participants twenty-nine had a family history of alcoholism.

All the participants consumed a number of drinks, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic between eight pm and ten pm, to the point of intoxication. The research team monitored their sleep pattern between eleven pm and seven am and completed a survey at bedtime and on awakening.

The female participants in the study who drank alcohol had less hours of sleep, woke more often and woke up for more minutes during the night. Moreover, women participants had more disrupted sleep than men. These disparities can be related to disparities in alcohol metabolism, explained lead author Todd Arendt, assistant professor of psychiatry and neurology from the University of Michigan.

He added that the rates of morning sleep quality were worse among those who drank alcohol. The study is to be published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
