Wearing helmets beneficial for skiers and snowboarders

The researchers suggested through a study that helmets should be included in the of ski hire, in order to protect head injuries. It is revealed that wearing helmet while skiing could reduce head injuries up to thirty-five percent in adults and sixty percent in children under aged thirteen.

The Australian team from the Department of Sports Science at Innsbruck analyzed a number of past studies in this area to give their views. They found that between nine to nineteen percent of all skiing injuries reported by ski petrol team were head injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, which were the leading cause of death in winter sports.

Another study showed that adults and children of all ages, wearing helmet while skiing, were considerably less prone to have head injuries in comparison to those who were without helmet. As a result the researchers concluded that wearing a ski helmet appears to make sense to prevent head injuries in all age groups.

It was also found in several other studies that nearly seventy-four percent head injuries occurred when skier hit  their head on the snow, ten percent of head injuries occurred when they collide with other skier and remaining thirteen percent injuries occurred on colliding with a fixed object. So it is strongly recommended that wearing a helmet is beneficial and safe for skier.

In many countries, where having ski areas have decided to promote and encourage the wearing of helmets on the slopes. For example, in Australia, it is mandatory for kids under aged sixteen to wear helmet when skiing or snowboarding. Actress Natasha Richardson died while skiing in Canada in 2009 after a fall on a beginner’s ski run, was not wearing helmet.
