In teenage acne is caused by the excess of grease which blocks the pores and generates the ideal milieu for bacteria to grow. A sebaceous gland is situated at the base of each hair which secretes sebum to clean the hair shaft. Acne occurs when the sex hormones, particularly testosterone hormone, becomes overactive and produce excess sebum.
Over certain period of time, this excess sebum blends with skin cells and blocks the pore. During teenage years, the sex hormones are particularly active. Some people have more sensitive receptors on their sebaceous glands which lift up these hormones more easily. Nearly eighty percent people aged eleven to thirty are affected by acne at some point.
Acne is categorized as mild, moderate and severe. In mild cases it causes an infrequent few spots. With a moderate level, the spots are persistent and recurring. According to researchers a new over-the-counter range of treatments containing brown seaweed, works as a strong antibacterial agent against one of the most common bacteria causing spots. The new treatment tested on sixty males aged between twelve and twenty-five with moderate acne, showed significantly decreased or cleared spots, in comparison to placebo group.
Brown seaweed can provide solution to problem of spots and oily skin. It is heaved from the seabed and converted into an extract that is used in treatment of acne. The cream made up of extract of seaweed had optimistic and significant impact claimed the producers of OXY range, Mentholatum.
