The researchers claim that cancer drug Taxol could pave new way for treating nerve cell regeneration after spinal cord injuries. The cancer drug has potential to repair injured nerve membranes of the spinal cord and reinstate their capability to transmit signals to the brain.

When occurred spinal cord injuries then many aspects halt the renaissance of nerve cells. These are networks of neurons in the region of spinal cord which are believed to generate a mechanical walking activity. The re-growth of nerve cells called axons is stopped as the formation of scar tissue and the obstruction of microtubules, small protein tubes in the cell cytoskeleton, according to experts.

To analyze the effects of drug Taxol in repairing injured nerve cells, the research team carried out introductory experiments on mice. They supplied a low concentration of Taxol through a small pump to cure mice with spinal cord injuries. After eight weeks of treatment, it was found that drug Taxol encouraged the speedy regeneration of injured sensory neurons.

The drug also cut the amount of scaring in axons. The cure with the cancer drug enhanced the mobility of the mice and escorted to improved function in their walking ability. The drug fundamentally rearranges microtubules of the cells allowing them to ignore stop signs and to regrow through reduced scar tissue, explained study author Dr. Andres Hurtado.

The drug Taxol not only encouraged their capacity to re-grow but also diminished the blockade formed by the scaring of nerve cells in the spine, explained co-researcher Frank Bradke of the study from the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Germany.

The good thing about Taxol is that it actually does both things right away, on one hand it essentially gets these neurons to start to cultivate and at the same time, it also diminishes these stop signs, it decreases the scarring course.

The researchers have high hope that Taxol which showed promise in mice will also function evenly well in human trials. The drug taxol has already approved for use in lung and breast cancer treatment, therefore the drug has great potential of being accepted by the human body, reported the study published in the journal Science.
