The newest study recommends that ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure helps boosting levels of vitamin D in the body. It is divergent to earlier fears about skin cancer that have made people to cautious about being in the sun.

The transformation of opinion comes in the middle of concern that people may not be receiving best possible levels of vitamin D.  Approximately ninety percent of the body’s supply comes from the action of sunlight on the skin. Since long experts had warned against the risk of skin cancer from UV rays.

But the latest recommendation from an array of health charities stated that exposure to the sun at middle of the day in summer months can help construct a store of the essential vitamin. It reverses cautions about using suntan cream with a high sun defense factor before going outside and avoiding exposure.

Experts have responded in reaction to the rising number of children developing rickets due to lack of vitamin D. The deficiency of vitamin D has also been associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, numerous cancers and softening of bones in adults.

The consensus statement from seven charities and professional bodies says, in the summer people should expose their arms, face, and legs for ten to fifteen minutes, three times a week. It is best made around noon, when UVB rays of the sun are most effective at synthesize vitamin D.

The body requires vitamin D for the absorption of calcium and retaining sturdy bones and teeth. It is also significant for the working of the immune system. The seven charities signing up to the consensus statement are Cancer Research UK , Diabetes UK ,the British Association of Dermatologists, the Heart Forum, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Primary Care Dermatology Society and the National Osteoporosis Society.
