The new research has found that a diet which is rich in oily fish could clasp the key of thwarting blindness among millions of elderly people. The Omega-3 fatty acids which are found in oily fish such as fresh tuna, salmon and mackerel can help in protecting against the most common form of vision loss among old people.
Presently there is no cure for the condition and it affects mostly people over the age of seventy years. It steadily cause sufferers to lose their central vision which starts from not able to see directly in front of them. The normal activities like reading, writing, watching television and driving become almost impossible.
In a study survey, research team from US examined more than twenty four hundred people aged seventy to eighty-five. They found that those eat oily fish especially crab, oysters or mussels, two times a week were far less prone to have AMD (age-related macular degeneration), reported the study published in the Ophthalmology journal.
They believe that omega-3 fatty acids help to protect cells in the retina from harm caused by sunshine that happens steadily with age. According study author Dr Sheila West, while participants in all age group have at least one portion fish or selfish per week. Those with advanced AMD were considerably less prone to consume high omega-3 fish and seafood.
It has long been recognized that omega-3 fatty acids helped in lowering blood pressure, reduce risk of irregular heart rhythms, decrease fat clogging the arteries and reduce levels of fat triglyceride that has been connected to heart attack risk. It has also shown to slash the risk of skin and prostate cancer.
