The new study has revealed that drinking milk can help in preventing Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity. It is divergent to well-liked opinion of dairy products as unhealthful. The regular consumption of dairy products could actually diminish the risk of developing the condition up to sixty percent.

To verify effect of dairy products, researchers followed nearly four thousand participants for twenty years. The measurement of blood glucose, insulin and levels of fatty acids were taken of all participants. It was found that higher levels of trans-palmitoleic acid were linked to healthier levels of blood glucose and insulin.

The trans-palmitoleic acid is a fatty acid that is found in the cheese, yoghurt, dairy fat of milk and butter. It can combat Type 2 diabetes, which affects millions of people around the globe. On the whole, participants with the highest levels of trans-palmitoleic acid had about sixty percent reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The evaluation of more than three hundred studies of milk consumption had suggested that the health advantages of milk consumption outweigh any harm which lies in its consumption. The magnitude of this connection is arresting. This symbolizes nearly three-fold variation in risk of developing diabetes among people with the highest blood levels of this fatty acid, explained study author Dariush Mozaffarian.

This is for the first time that association of trans-palmitoleic acid diabetes risk has been estimated. They speculate if this naturally occurring Trans fatty acid in dairy fats can partially imitate the normal biologic role of its cis counterpart, cis-palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid that is produced in the body. In animal trials, cis-palmitoleic acid protects against diabetes, added Dr Mozaffarian.

This is a tremendously strong defensive effect, stronger than other things they know can be advantageous against diabetes. The next step is to go ahead with an intercession experiment to see if there is therapeutic value in people, stated Prof Gokhan Hotamisligil, senior author on the study.
