Researchers proposed that a happy marriage can relieve the anguish of arthritis. The patients suffering rheumatoid arthritis who had loving support of their spouses, reported less joint pain and improved mobility in comparison to those who were single or whose marriage was on the sways.

It is believed by researchers that strong marriage not only provides emotional stability but also has strong effect on corporeal sensations like pain. RA occurs when the immune system attacks the joints, causing stiffness, pain and swelling. The joint of wrists, ankles, fingers, toes and knee are especially vulnerable to the disease.

The latest findings suggest the associations between being married and health depend on the quality of the marriage. There is something about being in a high-quality marriage that appears to bumper the emotional health of patients, explained study leader Dr Jennifer Barsky Reese from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.

To verify the impact of marital status on pain, Dr Barsky Reese and team studied more than two hundred and fifty patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Each one was asked if they were married happily or frequently fell out with their partners over issues like funds, lack of affection and their relationship with their in-laws.

Among those more than hundred reported loving marriage while more than forty confessed problems in their married life. The remainders were not married. When they were asked about pain feeling, the researchers said that a loving marriage may make pain easier to bear. They also recognized that stern pain can escort to breaking down of relationships.

Marriage could diminish the risk of anxiety and depression, which those tied the knot was much less likely to suffer the blues than those who stayed single, revealed the study carried out by a World Health Organization.
