The popularity of teeth whitening techniques has increased to a greater extent in last decade and about one million people have some and other form of teeth whitening treatment every year. Laser teeth whitening is much costly while professional bleaching is much cheaper than that. There are also cheaper whitening gels and deep clean tooth brushes available from pharmacists.

These are not believed to be effective. There appears to be increasing concern among teenagers about their dental health and internet proffer many whitening techniques. Some of these techniques have the potential to damage healthy teeth, explained Prof Andrew Eder, clinical director of the London Tooth Wear Centre.

Household baking soda is an abrasive and its repeated use can worn away white enamel and leave teeth browner and with increased sensitivity. Salt crystals will scuff the enamel. Any treatment involving acid is particularly harmful, added Prof Eder.

The firm tissue of the teeth needs strong compounds to whiten it that are only safe for use by properly trained clinicians. Trying to use techniques for whitening from the internet actually is not a good idea and could escort to individuals damaging their teeth and causing pain, explained Dr Stuart Johnston of the British Dental Association.
