Eating celery could halt memory loss

In new study researchers have revealed that chemical found in high concentrations in celery and in pepper could stop loss of memory as you get older. Celery taste is one that many people never obtain, but the new study has given them a reason to eat it.

The composite of plant called luteolin reduces inflammation in the brain that is already connected with ageing and memory related problems. It halts the discharge of molecules that cause inflammation. The research team from the University of Illinois examined the effects of luteolin on the brains and behavior of young mice aged three to six months and older mice of age two.

Mice usually survive between two and three years. The trail mice were fed a prescribed diet or luteolin-supplemented diet for four weeks. Usually elderly mice have greater levels of brain inflammation and fare less well in memory tests than younger adult mice.

It was found that elderly mice fed on the luteolin-supplemented diet performed better in learning and memory tasks than their peers, reported the study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Their levels of brain inflammation coordinated with those of the younger adult mice.

The statistics proposes that consuming a healthy diet has the potential to decrease age related inflammation in the brain that can consequence in enhanced cognitive health, explained lead researcher Professor Rodney Johnson.
