Contraceptive gel could be offered as alternative to Pill

The newest experimental data showed that a birth control gel which is applied to the skin could proffer women a substitute to the pill. This gel carries hormones to prevent pregnancy in similar way as contraceptives do. Previous studies showed that the gel is effective and is endured well.

It does not have the distinctive side effects linked with the Pill such as weight gain and problem of acne. The Nestorone gel can be applied on thighs, arms, shoulders and abdomen. Moreover it is absorbed rapidly without any remains. According to experts it is also appropriate for breastfeeding mothers. It does not interfere with supply of milk.

The latest study conducted by Dr Ruth Merkatz from the not-for-profit Population Council research centre in New York, which involved eighteen women aged between twenty and thirty. The optimum dose of gel was three mg a day.  They found that over the period of seven months, none of women using the treatment fell pregnant.

The gel suppressed the production of eggs by the ovary, showed, hormone studies. The study has shown that gel is effective and it could proffer a substitute to the Pill which is used by millions of women worldwide. Any contraceptive system that boosts the option of methods available to women and helps to prevent unwanted pregnancies is welcome.

Their research showed that millions of women using a contraceptive method were unhappy with those methods. Those women would benefits from improved choices and alternatives, explained Natika Halil, director of information from the Family Planning Association. This product would not suit everyone and will only be for women comfortable with it on their skin and having their contraceptive cover that way
