Researchers warned through new study that middle aged women who drink a glass of wine daily could twice at risk of suffering from breast cancer. Women who drank just seven units of drinks a week had at higher risk of developing lobular cancer than those who did not drink at all.
It has already been warned by experts that extreme drinking can cause a universal rise in breast cancer. The second most common form of breast cancer is Lobular cancer. This accounts for a fifth of all tumours in women aged forty-five to fifty- five.
Researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre believe that alcohol raises the level of the hormone oestrogen that has earlier been linked to increase the risk of breast cancer. But did not seem to raise the risk of ductal breast cancer which is the most common type of the illness reported the study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Women who drank one drink per day had twice the risk of lobular type breast cancer but not increased risk of ductal type breast cancer. Ductal cancer is much more common than lobular cancer accounting for seventy percent of all breast cancers while lobular cancer accounts for only ten to fifteen percent of cases, explained lead researcher Dr Christopher.
According to official rule women should drink no more than fourteen units a week. Observing all the evidence, there is persuasive proof that alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. About one in five cases of breast cancer can be prevented by cutting down the amount women drink, explained Dr Rachel Thompson from the World Cancer Research Fund.
There is also strong proof that alcohol raises the risk of bowel cancer, liver cancer, cancer of mouth, pharynx and larynx and oesophagal cancer. The new study has confirmed that breast cancer is more common amongst women who drink alcohol regularly and the more they drink, the more this risk increases, said Henry Scowcroft, of Cancer Research UK.
