Researchers have revealed the secret of good night’s sleep. They believe that it s all attributable to explodes of brainwaves deep in the brain. People who produce the most of these electrical flurries called spindles, those slept most soundly. The brainwaves believed to be signaled that mind was firm at work viewing out the whine of sirens, growl of traffic and other noises that disturb sleep.

Wheedling the brain into producing more spindles could help people wake up revitalized in the morning. They wanted to examine what the brain did to encourage sound sleep despite noise and why various people were better at settling nap than others, said lead researcher Jeffrey Ellenbogen from the prestigious Harvard Medical School in the US.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Ellenbogen observed the brain activity of twelve healthy males and females who spent three nights in sleep lab. The first night participants spent was calm and pleasant but the next two nights they spent were nosier with fourteen various sounds including sounds of traffic, alarms and chatting that become more and more noisily.

People whose brain formed the most spindles were most immune to the noise, reported the study published in the journal Cell. Spindles are produced by brain region known as thalamus that only appears when asleep. It broadcasts sounds deep inside the brain to other regions of the brain which recognize and respond to them.

It is believed that stacks of spindles are signal that thalamus is firm at work jamming sounds from being processed permitting to sleep sound. The brain is even active when you are asleep and when thalamus is more active you sleep better.

During sleep your neurons are busy doing complex processing that this study showed, forming sleep spindles to protect you from being awaken by noises in the environment. The learning about the phenomenon could escort to more effective sleeping pills, said Dr Ellenbogen.
