Broccoli can help treat Crohn’s disease

The consumption of broccoli and bananas could prevent replaces of Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is a long term condition that causes inflammation in the lining of the digestive system. Due to inflammation the sections of the digestive system got damaged. Nearly eight percent of Crohn’s disease sufferers require surgery in order to ease their symptoms.

The symptoms of Corhn’ disease may include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fatigue. Researchers believe that the condition is caused due to genetic and environmental factors. The condition is very rare and affects approximately seven people in every one lakh. The occurrence of Crohn’s is rising worldwide and is most common in developed countries.

The diet in developed countries is low in fibers and high in processed food items. The outlook for Crohn’s disease is extremely changeable. People can have long epochs of remission that last for weeks or months, chased by flare ups. Currently there is no cure for Crohn’s disease. Drugs are available that can be used to treat the symptoms and prevent them from returning.

In latest study researchers from the University of Liverpool, analyzed a range of soluble plant fibre to see their effect on Crohn’s disease. They found that soluble fibre from plantain which is close relative of broccoli the virus E.coli from crossing into cells in the intestine.

Broccoli soluble fibre and plantain reduced conduction of E.coli by forty-five percent to eight-two percent. The lab study was confirmed in tissue samples taken from sufferers undergoing surgery for other gut disorders, reported the study published in the journal Gut.

A clinical trial was carried out led Prof Rhodes and team that involved seventy-six patients of Crohn’s to test effect in people. It makes sense for the sufferers of Crohn’s to take supplement of these fibres to prevent relapses of the disease, explained Prof Rhodes.
