A new study has revealed that children who walk to school in the morning feel less stress during the school day. The team of researchers from US said that stroll of one mile curtails increase in heart rate and blood pressure which can escort to cardiovascular disease later in life.

It was found that kids who were given a replicated ride to school experienced an increase in blood pressure three times higher than children who took a replicated walk. The levels of stress were nearly double in submissive commuters as compared to active kids.

A team of researchers led by Professor James Roemmich, from the University of Buffalo studied a group of twenty boys and twenty girls aged ten to fourteen. Half of the children were asked to be seated in chairs and watched ten minute slide show of images of a residential area ending with an image of a school.

The other half were asked to execute one mile walk on a treadmill at the pace of their choice, wearing a book bag containing ten percent of their body weight. As they walked the images of neighborhood were projected onto a screen. After twenty minutes of rest, children took a Stroop test.

The test includes questions to correctly identify the color of color names printed on the wrong hue. It was seen that during that activity the heart rate raise by three beats per minute in kids who walked as compared to eleven beats in kids rode to school. Levels of stress and blood pressure were affected likewise.

The process of cardiovascular disease begins in childhood so if they can find some way to stop or slow that process that would give a significant health advantage. They know that corporeal activity has a defensive effect on the growth of cardiovascular disease and one way it can do so is by dipping stress reactivity, said Professor Roemmich.

Walking is one of the greenest, cheapest forms of exercise you can do and not only can it impact your physical health, it is good for children’s learning, said Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets.
