Experts from an international group have identified the genetic secrets that affect cholesterol levels in the blood. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can escort to cardiovascular diseases. The finding could pave the ways for new drugs to beat cardiovascular disease.
The chances of hart disease and other problems are increased greatly by the amount of artery clogging cholesterol and other fats in the blood. Up till now little was known about the genes that mange their levels. More than one hundred researchers from seventeen countries studied the DNA of more than 100,000 people who took part in studies.
The studies flagged up ninety-five genetic alterations associated with blood fats or lipids and cardiovascular disease, reported the journal Nature. Added trails showed that numerous genes also contribute to cardiovascular problems in other racial groups from around the world. Statin is used extensively to lower cholesterol, but its side effects escort many to stop its intake.
As many as ninety-five different genes seem to be involved in regulating cholesterol levels in the blood that exemplified just how convoluted the biology. Although much more work was needed to understand what the genes do and how they work together, such research is crucial in beating heart disease, said Professor Peter Weissberg, of the British Heart Foundation.
He added that though this is just the initial footstep along a long road, the good news is that the more they understand about cholesterol regulation, the more likely it is that new medication will be developed to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Genetic studies that review an extensive diversity of human populations are a powerful tool for identifying hereditary factors in health and disease. These results help refine their course for averting and curing cardiovascular disease, a health problem that affects millions, said Francis Collins, one of the world’s leading geneticists one of the world’s leading geneticists.
