Researchers have developed a nasal spray which could deal with the bacteria of pneumococcus. The new discovery could provide benefits to thousands of children by preventing the fatal conditions that include blood poisoning, pneumonia and meningitis. More than ninety types of pneumococcal are there that can cause above said fatal conditions.
The known bacteria can also cause sinusitis and middle ear infections. Up to one million children worldwide, under the age of five die due to pneumococcus. Researchers said that the new vaccine for the condition would contain a matter known as D4Ply that is splinter of a protein made up of almost all the dissimilar kinds of pneumococcus.
If their trails prove successful, the new vaccine could defend against most strains. Their trail will spotlight on the cells taken from the adenoids of approximately thirty children under the age of five to observe whether the vaccine is effective as nasal spray. They think that new vaccine could be much cheaper to create than existing drugs.
Babies and children are more susceptible to infection. Meningitis and septicemia kill number of children in UK every year and can destroy the lives of those who survive. That is a significant area of research which has potential to defend many children from serious sicknesses if the vaccine proves to be successful, said Dr Yolande Harley, deputy director of the children’s health charity Action Medical Research.
The research is being escorted by Dr Qibo Zhang, from the school of infection and host defense at the University of Liverpool. He had previously carried out studies on how immune system reacts to pneumococcal infections and potential vaccines.
