In a new study researchers have found millions of women could get free from the despair of fibroids with the morning-after pill. The expansion of fibroids in and around the womb affects one in four women at some pint in their lives. Its symptoms may include heavy periods, infertility, miscarriage, anemia, bloating and constipation.

The existing drugs can cause a synthetic menopause and give women hot flushes and increase the risk of fragile bones. In severe cases women are given hysterectomy. The new morning-after pill known as Ellaone could relieve the symptoms while reduce the side effects and the need for the surgery.

It effectively reduces fibroids size and improves the quality of life and has the potential to aid in the preservation of fertility in fibroids sufferers, said the lead researchers Dr Alicia Armstrong. They studied the effects of Ellaone on fifty-seven women. The pill was initiated as an emergency contraceptive. Once a day pill reduced the expansions and clogged the heavy periods.

Moreover women had more energy and had improved quality of life. Unlike the existing treatment Ellaone did not cause any serious side effects to patients. Ellaone can be used for up to five days after lovemaking against pregnancy and is more effective than any other morning-after pill. It wedges the progesterone and the expansion of fibroids.

Many women found that their fertility was affected by fibroids and existing treatment, could also cause important fertility problems. Any research into new, non-invasive treatment which would also preserve patient fertility would be extremely welcomed, explained Clare Lewis-Jones, of charity Infertility Network UK.

The results are convincing and lead them to conclude that UPA is an effective and non-invasive treatment for fibroids that can help maintain fertility in women whose only option up till now was to have surgery, said lead researcher Dr Lynette Neiman from the US government’s National Institutes of Health.
