Bone turnover linked with diabetes

In a new study researchers from US found that bones play a significant role in regulating blood sugar and can be the causal reason of diabetes among some people. Type 2 diabetes is the most widespread form of the condition and is caused when the body no longer properly reacts to insulin leading to out of control blood sugar.

Lab study over mice has shown that the go kaput of old bones to make way for growth of new bones also help in keeping the healthy level of glucose in the blood. It showed that a hormone known as osteocalcin appeared as a connection. Osteocalcin, released by bone regulated the glucose level.

Osteocalcin turns on the production of insulin in the pancreas that in order improves the capability of other cells to receive glucose from the blood, found study leader Dr. Gerard Karsenty from Columbia University Medical Center. But in his newest study, he found that osteocalcin only worked when bones were broken down during its natural turnover.

The results of the study suggest that in some people diabetes can be activated with changes in bones. This could lead to better drugs to control diabetes, and drugs planned to arouse the link between bones and insulin could lead to better treatment for diabetes, added Dr. Karsenty.

The significant result of the study is that drugs used to strengthen the bones in osteoporosis can meddle with the process and can cause problem with blood sugar. It has important insinuations for patients having both diabetes and osteoporosis. Firstly, study shows that osteocalcin is involved in onset of diabetes. Secondly, bone can become a new target in treating diabetes.

Finally, osteocalcin could become a treatment for diabetes. The research is at an early stage. At this satge change in lifestyle like eating healthy diet, maintain healthy weight and more physical activity can help to reduce risk of developing diabetes, said Dr Victoria King, head of research at Diabetes UK.
