In a new study researchers have found that drugs which are used commonly to treat the problems of heart have been connected with self- effacingly increased risk of cancer. The data published from all trails of has found one additional case of cancer on every one hundred five patients treated.
ARBs are prescribed mainly for conditions like heart failure and high blood pressure and are used by million of people around the world. Researchers recommended people not to stop taking of drugs. The results are published in The Lancet Oncology.
In newest study observed data that was available publically and found information on various cancers for sixty eight thousand patients, diagnosis of new cancer for sixty one thousand patients and cancer death for ninety-three thousand patients. In general they found that ARBs intake was linked with increased possibility of new cancer diagnosis in contrast to intake of other heart drugs.
Only lung cancer was the specific type of cancer which was considerably higher in patients those taking ARBs. Researchers also found that there was no difference in cancer deaths though it was pointed out those patients were not reviewed for long enough. Some animal studies suggested that there might be a link with blood vessel growth in tumors.
Before anyone act on the verdicts, drug watchdogs that have access to far more detailed information, need to look intimately at factors such as age, smoking history and duration of use to elucidate the risk. More computations are required on if some ARBs are associated with a higher risk than others, explained Dr Ilke Sipahi, from The University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland.
He further said that the patients who are currently on ARBs should not stop taking these medicines on their own because they have beneficial effects. Patients need to make a decision with their physician about the possible risks and if they need to change.
