Many men are unable to urinate properly due to prostate problems. This condition affects million of men worldwide and it develops when the prostate gland becomes swollen, habitually as part of natural ageing process. The swollen prostate then presses on the urethra which is the tube that carries urine out of the body. This problem makes it difficult for men to empty their bladder and causes abdominal pain and bladder stones.
The first symptom of this problem is difficulty in urinating even when the bladder is full. This common prostate problem is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Currently doctors treat BPH with drugs which relax muscle fibers within the prostate and reduce the obstacle or make the prostate to shrink itself. I spite of that some men develop severe urinary retention.
This condition is eased by fitting a catheter which is a thin tube that nourishes through urethra in to the bladder. This collets urine into a bag usually strapped to patients leg. But the new magnetic valve could revolutionize the urinary retention treatment because patient need not to carry bag when to urinate. This treatment involves insertion of another type of catheter into the urethra.
The one of the catheter goes into the bladder and other runs down the urethra to top of the penis. This end is fitted with a tiny valve that contains a minute disc. The disc is magnetized so that it’s mechanically drawn to the end of the metallic valve, providing a seal that stops urine escaping.
Once the patient presses a hand-held magnet next to the underneath of his genitals the disc is pulled back and the urine can flee. A magnetic valve implanted in the bladder known as Surinate could help thousands of men unable to urinate properly because of prostate problems. It can be kept in place for four weeks or until the problem causing the urinary retention has been solved.
