Varifocal glasses could cause falls in aged

In the new study researchers have found that the reason of many falls among old people is wearing varifocal glasses while going out and those falls can be prevented if older people do not wear such glasses. Falls are the foremost cause of disability and death in the aged, but theses can be prevented up to forty percent if aged people wear single-lens glasses outside.

Varifocal glasses are generally prescribed to elderly people to accurate the problem seeing both far and near in one pair of glasses. Such glasses may make the problem of impairing equilibrium, according to Australian study. Earlier studies has also been shown the risk of falling while wearing varifocal glasses, when walking outside and going up or downstairs.

The risk of falling has to be counterbalance with it benefits when it is required to change in focal length to perform some tasks such as shopping, cooking and driving. To confirm the relationship of fall with varifocal glasses, researcher enlisted more than six hundred people over the age of sixty-five with a history of falls.

All of them used varifocal glasses and not single lens glasses and had worn them while went outside three times a week. Half of them were give single lens glasses while going outside and half were not. Researchers found that first group had eight percent less falls than the second. People, who regularly went outside, had forty percent less incidences of fall.

On the basis of findings researchers suggest that elderly people who are active outside should toggle between varifocal and single lens glasses, regardless of the inconvenience. Elderly people who spend most of their time in side the house for them varifocal glasses are the best option.
