Researchers who underlined a range of accidental side effects advised health care providers to think more watchfully before prescribing cholesterol-busting drugs. Some amount of and type of statins are connected with a great amount of adverse effects that include liver problem and kidney failure. Millions of adults worldwide take the drug to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

For many people the advantages of statins overshadowed any unfavorable effects but the actual finding may reconsider the adverse effects in each patient and the adverse effects may differ in each patient, explained researchers from the University of Nottingham. Around one in four adults that is aged over forty is prescribed statins.

Prescription for statins would rise by thirty percent a year as health care providers find more people entitled had forecasted by the Department of Health. Anyone judged to have greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease over ten years is recommended a statins. But the latest research specifies that the problem may lie in a real life population.

Adverse effects of statins that were recognized in the study, published in the British Medical Journal include kidney failure, liver problem, cataracts and muscles weakness. The high dose of statins appeared to be linked with greater risk of liver dysfunction and kidney failure. Adverse effects were greater in the first five years of usage.

There was also positive side of the study that showed no major connection between the use of statins and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, osteoporotic fracture, blood clot, or many forms of cancer that include breast, lung, renal, gastric, colon and prostate. Computer progarmme they had developed meant GPs could work out which patients were most at risk of side-effects, explained study leader Professor Julia Hippisley-Cox.
