Plaque is formed when decay-causing bacteria are attached to the surface of the tooth enamel and formed a sultry layer. The bacteria that live in plaque discharge acids that weaken tooth enamel and raise the risk of tooth decay. The risk of gum inflammation is also raised due to bacteria and their acid, explained Dr Mervyn Druian, of the British Dental Association.
Other effect of plaque is that the bacterial level in the mouth is reduced due to reduce dental plaque. When a person suffers from bleeding gums, it can get into the blood and raises the risk of atherosclerosis, which is known as narrowing of arteries. The bacteria nourish on highly carbonated and sugary foods.
To lower the plaque you should take foods that have low in sugar and contain balanced amount of carbohydrate, protein and oils. Below is explained latest research into plaque busters that can help you to make your mouth free from cavity.
Products with Polyphenols : Some products such as green tea, red wine and cranberry juice are good source of polyphenol which help in reducing the formation of plaque and prevents teeth from cavity. Consumption of cranberry juice helps to wash away more than fifty percent cavity causing bacteria from the mouth, found in trial at University of Rochester Medical Centre in the US. It also prevents oral bacteria from producing acids.
Use of toothpastes : You must choose toothpaste that contains ingredient to prevent plaque. Anti-bacterial substance known as triclosan is contained in Colgate Total, it reduces plaque and keeps your mouth fresh for twelve hours after use. Other formula that dissolves plaque is contained in Arm & Hammer’s Brilliant Sparkle Gel toothpaste which breaks the bonds attached to plaque on the surface of tooth.
Gum to bust plaque : Many chew on gums contain Sorbitol or Xylitol and sugar alternatives that have effects of reducing plaque. Oral bacteria can not consume Xylitol and they starve and there is reduction in decay. People having problem of decay can chew Xylitol gum daily for four weeks. People who chew dental gums regularly have 30 to 60 per cent less decay found by Harvard School of Dental Medicine in a study review.
Use of olive oil : Olive oil helps to strengthen teeth and limits the formation of plaque when is added to cooking and salads. Olive oil contains oleuropein, an anti-bacterial composite that ends gram negative bacteria which causes diseases of gum and loss of bones attached to teeth. Found researcher from University of Madrid. Olive oil covers the teeth with a coating of fat particles which prevent formation of plaque.
Take professional help : When above said remedies do not produce desired result as they are not likelt to eliminate plaque completely then it become essential to take mechanical removal. Regular flossing can clean out food from between teeth. An electrical toothbrush can remove plaque more effectively than regular toothbrush. Routine visit to dental specialist is also necessary in cases where plaque hardens and becomes difficult to remove, explained, Dr Druian.
