New study claimed that consuming handful of pistachio nuts a day can annihilate bad cholesterol, protect against heart disease and help in preventing various kinds of cancers. The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition that pursued the earlier studies which revealed, pistachios helped in destroying bead cholesterol that could lead to heart attack and stroke.
Pistachios are rich source of the main nutritional antioxidants lutein, beta carotene and gamma-tocopherol when compared to other nuts. Lutein is found in dark and green leafy vegetables and is significant for healthy skin and vision. Beta carotene revolves into vitamin A that prevents you from cancer and gamma-tocopherol which is common form of vitamin E that protects against heart disease.
Researches also supposed that antioxidants also prevent the moving of cholesterol into the walls of blood vessel that causes inflammation. Too confirm the effects of pistachios on antioxidant levels, the researchers’ testes the effects on participants. The participants ate three different diets for a month that included, a normal cholesterol lowering diet with no nuts.
The two other two food diets include one and half ounce and three ounce of pistachio correspondingly. In the end of the study they found that participants had much more antioxidants in their blood. Moreover they had lower concentrations of cholesterol when they ate pistachios.
Their results suggested that a heart healthy diet including pistachios contributed to a decreased in serum oxidized-LDL levels, in part through cholesterol lowering, and also due to an added benefit of an antioxidants in the pistachios, explained Professor Penny Kris-Etherton from Pennsylvania State University.
