Regular indulgence in overtime work and to work more than ten to eleven hours can increase your risk of heart attack by two-third times, researchers suggested in a new study. Smoking is a known cause of heart attack, in addition to it health care providers found that people who worked three to four hours of overtime a day had sixty percent higher risk.
Overtime working is strongly connected with number of cases of heart disease. It highlights the importance of work-life balance. In trail researchers found 369 cases in which people suffered heart diseases that caused development of angina and death. People who spent more time at work have less time to exercise, relax and unwind.
People who do overtime may also be stressed, anxious and depressed. Researchers found that care minded persons were more prone to ‘Type A’ personality whoa are highly obsessed, violent and touchy. They also told that employees who worked overtime might also likely to work while ill. Such employees were reluctant to be absent from work despite their illness.
More researches are needed before they could be confident that overtime work would cause coronary heart disease, explained lead researcher Mianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Helsinki and University College London.
Until researchers have understood how your working lives could affect the risk to your heart health, there were simple ways to look after your heart health at work, like taking a brisk walk at lunch, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or by swapping that biscuit for a piece of fruit, explained Cathy Ross, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation.
Employers and patients needed to be aware of all of the risk factors for coronary heart disease and should consider overtime as one factor that might lead to a number of medical conditions, explained Dr John Challenor, from the Society of Occupational Medicine.
