Taking adequate sleep is a key to healthy living, in a new study researchers have warned that getting less than six hours of sleep in night can lead to an early death. People who regularly have little sleep are twelve percent more likely to die over twenty five yeas periods than those who got six hors of sleep. Researchers have also found that sleeping for more than nine hours is indicator of ill health.

The finding is based on sixteen studies done on millions of people. Premature death was associated with getting too little or too much sleep except ideal sleep for six to eight hours in each night. Ill-health is directly connected with poor sleep which ultimately leads to premature death. Too much sleep may be an indicator of ill health, researchers believe.

In modern society there is steady reduction in people’s average amount of sleep intake and this sleeping pattern is more common among full time workers. It suggests that it may be due to longer hours of work, more shift work and due to social pressure. Worsening of their health status is often escorted by expansion of sleeping time, explains Professor Francesco Cappuccio, leader of the Sleep, Health and Society Programme.

He further told that more work had required appreciating precisely why sleep appeared to be so significant for good health. Sleep can be affected by many diseases and conditions such as depression. Having less than six hours of sleep in night is not appropriate for health.

Those who take less than six hours of sleep may remain drowsy in day and it can increase chances of having accident while driving or operating dangerous apparatus.
