New research shows that exercise in green space, just for five minutes can lead to an instant improvement in mood and self-confidence. Scientists are now suggesting doctors to prescribe an open air workout to patients who suffer from mental illness to enhance their mental health. There are already evidences which show that activities such walking or cycling can naturally boost your well being.
The outdoor exercise not only protects you against future health hazards but it also increases your life expectancy explains Dr. Dr. Barton, a sports scientist and her research is the first that resolves how much time people should spend in an open air to decrease the risk developing mental illness and to improve self well-being.
The study looked at various outdoor activities such as gardening, cycling, boating, fishing, horse-riding and walking in different location such as parks and gardens. Just five minutes of workout have shown the major effects. Exercising for longer period of time in green space obviously have positive effects but to a smaller scale.
The study also showed that significant improvement in mood and self-esteem of the patients was also noted when they exercised in wilderness or by lake or river. People who were inactive, stressed and mentally ill would possibly benefit the most from an open air workout explained lead researcher Jules Pretty at University of Essex.
He further told that employer could encourage staff in stressful workplace to take short walk at lunchtime in the nearest park to improve their mental health. Outdoor exercise plans could provide benefits to young lawbreakers. All doctors should consider exercise as a treatment for mental well-being of the patients.
