Acupuncture can manage anxious dental patients

Many people feel extreme amount of fear while visiting to the dentist. The anxiety and fear due to dental visit s known as odontophobia in medical terms. But new research has shown that acupuncture is proved helpful in managing uneasiness related with dental treatment. New study showed that every third person report some amount of fear and anxiety when facing dentist for dental treatment.

Just five minutes session of acupuncture therapy could reduce the anxiety and fear of the patients. Those who were previously avoiding the dentist now were able to undergo treatment after receiving acupuncture. For clinical trial they looked at four men and sixteen women who were afraid of going to the dentist. All of them were give one session of acupuncture that targeted their specific points.

After acupuncture session all were able to undergo for dental treatment. Their anxiety and fear related to the dentist was also gone. Other techniques like hypnosis can also be used to relieve anxiety and fear for dental work. But according to researchers such techniques may require considerable level of skill for their proper usage moreover such techniques are time consuming.

Researchers from Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield said that they believed that acupuncture might offer a simple and inexpensive method of treatment, although they warned that larger studies were needed to confirm the findings.
