Hypothyroidism – causes and its Yogic management

Metabolism of our body is controlled by endocrine system especially by the thyroid gland. The required amount of thyroid hormone becomes deficient in hypothyroidism. Thyroid gland becomes inactive and does not produce sufficient amount thyroxin hormones. Thyroxin hormones are required for the proper functioning of human body. In yoga various Yogis postures are taught to stimulate and tone up the endocrine system. Body is moved, twisted and stretched in different directions to massage endocrine glands which help in regulating the blood flow to them.

The shoulder stand pose for Hypothyroidism : This Yoga pose massages endocrinal gland and regulates the blood flow to them. This posture is effective for thyroid gland that becomes underactive due to hypothyroidism. Body is inverted in such position that blood flows towards neck region where thyroid gland is situated. The oxygenated blood stimulates and nourishes the thyroid gland. Moreover this posture rectifies and purifies the circulation of blood.

Step by step detailed technique

Lie down flat on the back. Keep the legs straight, bring toes and heels together and stretch the feet forward. Stretch the arms along and close to the body. Palms should face the ground. The whole body must be straight from top to toe.

Start inhaling and raise the legs upward slowly from the hip joint. Bring the legs to a 90 degree angle and stay in this position. Exhaling and pressing the palms on the floor, take the legs beyond the head, making them parallel to the ground.

Normalize the breath and stay on in this position for some time. In this position the toes will remain fully stretched and knees will not bend. Now support the back with the hands and stretch the legs upward towards the sky slowly.

Place the palms on the back as far as below as possible and in such a way that the whole body stand straight upon the shoulders. The chin should touch the chest. Now relax the toes and maintain this position.

Breathe in the normal manner. Then slowly come back to the ground bring down the legs very slowly. Then relax in the corpse pose for a few minutes.

Precautions for the shoulder stand pose :  People suffering from hypertension , having any problem in neck, ear & eyes should strictly avoid this pose. The pregnant women or suffering from any menstrual problem should also avoid this pose.
