How to treat Sciatica pain with yoga

Sciatica pain refers as a sharp, lighting like pain that shoots down the back of the leg. People around the world are suffering from this annoying ailment. Sciatica pain occurs if heriniating material from a rapture spinal disc impinges on the delicate nerve roots emerging from the lower three lumber and two sacral segment of spinal column which converge to form the sciatica nerve. This sciatica nerve run down the back of each leg, muscles of back of thighs, calves and soles.

Due to this connection sciatica pain may be experienced in buttock, thigh and calf. The root cause of the problem lies in the lower back region. In response to this pain the muscles of the back of the leg go into a tight spasm, especially if the sufferer continues to walk, because each step stretches and further irritate the injured nerve roots.

Treatment of sciatica :  Sciatica pain can be treated through herbal remedies and through medication.  In medication pain killer and muscle relaxants are prescribed. But yoga is one of the best treatments for curing sciatica pain. Yoga is combination of both physical and mental exercises which provide relief in sciatica pin.

The basic yogic practices for sciatica are the backward bending Asana which strengthening the posterior ligaments and muscles holding the disc in position and promote the flow of blood into lower spinal region. Backward bending asanas should be practiced to capacity, gradually increasing the time of practice each day in order to restore spinal stability and regain a full range of back movement.

Each session should conclude with deep relaxation for 15 to 20 minutes in Advasana. Later on Shavasana can be adopted and longer practice of Yoga Nidra can be introduced. Avoid all forward bending asanas for at least six months as these can precipitate a recurrence of the original condition. Throughout the recovery period, the cross legged sitting posture should be avoided. Pranayama and meditation in Vajrasana are recommended.
