Symptoms, causes and treatment of Dyspareunia

The problem ofDyspareunia is faced by most of women in their lifespan. Feeling of pain during intercourse that can be due to variety of reasons such as local infection, hormonal changes with aging, or an allergy caused by the use of personal care products. Women are hesitating to discuss this problem with their gynecologist. This problem could be treated successfully if its reasons can be evaluated correctly.

Symptoms of Dyspareunia : Its symptoms include burning, tearing, ripping or sensation of aching associated with penetration. The pain can be felt at the opening of vagina, deep in pelvis and anywhere between. The pain can also be felt in entire pelvic region and may happen only with deep thrusting.

Cause of Dyspareunia: The common cause of Dyspareunia among women are vaginal dryness and lack of arousal during sexual intercourse. It occurs due to fall of sex hormones in menopausal and post menopausal women. Use of lubricant during intercourse can provide relief in this problem. Bacterial and yeast infectioncan cause Dyspareunia. It is also cause due to endometriosis, the endometrium,  is the tissue lining of the uterus, may grow outside the uterus that  causes deep pain during sex.

Common drugs used for allergy, high blood pressure or depression may affect the amount of vaginal lubrication, sexual arousal and desire. An abdominal surgery or a scar during delivery can cause a lot of pain during intercourse.  Ovarian cysts, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) are more serious causes of Dyspareunia.

Treatment of Dyspareunia : Women who suffer from Dyspareunia should consult their gynecologist and explain the symptoms. Gynecologist will perform complete pelvic examination additionally Pap smear test can be may be conducted to find out any infection inside. The treatment options depend upon the results of the pelvic examination and other diagnostic tests.

In case of infections medications are given either orally or as vaginal peccaries’. If the problem is caused due insufficient lubrication then a cream or jelly is prescribed be to reduce the pain. Relaxation exercises are told to regain control over vaginal muscles. This may help in reducing pain during sexual intercourse.
